Total deaths decreased by 7 per cent for the year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated.
That was the biggest rate of decrease in the nation and came despite Tasmania having the oldest population.
The ABS estimated Tasmania's total population was 529,903 on September 30.
With state population growing by an average 1500 per quarter during the year, it would most likely have pushed well past 530,000 people for the first time ever in the following months.
The annual growth was also helped by a 1.2 per cent increase in births and positive net migration from the mainland and overseas.
The ABS estimated the state added a net 1702 people in the September quarter.
That included a gain of 219 through natural increase (births less deaths).
It was the fourth consecutive positive quarter for natural increase, after deaths outnumbered births in the September quarter of 2017.
That was the first instance of negative natural increase in Tasmania in the statistical series, with the records dating back to 1981.
Also in the September quarter last year, Tasmania gained 953 more people from overseas than it lost to overseas.
It was the strongest quarter for net overseas migration since the September quarter of 2017.
The state also gained 530 more people from the mainland than it lost to the mainland in the September quarter last year.
Net interstate migration had been positive in every quarter since the last quarter of 2015.
Historically, Tasmania tends to lose more people to the mainland than it gains from the mainland when the state economy performs significantly worse than the national economy.
Tasmania's population grew by 1.2 per cent for the year, with national population up by 1.6 per cent.
The state's growth rate was fifth highest among the eight states and territories.
The nation added 395,100 people during the year, taking population to 25.1 million.
