The project was funded by a grant provided by Landcare and South 32 TEMCO.

The aim of the play area was to allow for pupils enjoy and engage with local fauna that are known to frequent the area.

Business manager at South George Town Primary Peggy Pickrill said the area will provided a great companion to their other natural play area known as 'Wombat Walk'.

"We're really fortunate that we have a school that's surrounded by bush and we have 'Wombat Walk' already," she said.

"Often this time of year we have snakes and stuff around there so a bit tricky to take the children out when they're about."

Ladybirds are among the many interesting creatures that children will be able to get up close to.

"This is a great idea, we're hoping to bring a more natural element to the school because it's a space for children to learn and play," Ms Pickrill said.

Construction of Echidna Way was slated to be complete within a week. Advanced skills teacher Janine Spicer said without the support of Landcare and South 32 TEMCO Echidna Way wouldn't be possible.

"We really appreciate their help because we are only a small school," she said.

"We never would have been able to afford a project like this so to have South 32 and Junior Landcare help us out is fabulous.

"Some of these children's parents work at TEMCO so they're actually benefiting which is really exciting."

South 32 TEMCO's Dylan McKinn said it was really what the company wanted to be a part of.

"It's a great way for us to be involved within the local community," he said.

"Rather than just being the big company, it's our goal to get out there and make a difference within the community and being able to provide opportunities for schools like George Town South to be able to do this.

"It's really a no brainer for us to provide them with facilities that make it really good for school children to get out and get involved."
