The issue was discussed at the Northern Midlands Council meeting on Monday, March 18.

The smell is allegedly caused by the JBS meatworks on Tannery Road and the TasWater sewerage treatment plant on Bishopsbourne Road.

The council made the decision to write to the EPA, TasWater, and JBS detailing the community's complains about the issue, and to request a formal response on actions being taken to address the issue.

A TasWater spokesperson said they understood odour could at times be unpleasant, and TasWater worked hard in managing all sewage treatment plants to minimise any smell.

"At present Longford's sewage treatment plant is working normally," they said.

"In relation to an increase in reports of odour, TasWater is conducting a detailed odour investigation.

"This involves checking the sewer network at Longford to see if there are any problems that may be causing odour."

The spokesperson said this could include broken sewer pipes or discharge of waste into the sewer which could cause odour in localised areas.

"TasWater has a plan to upgrade the Longford sewage treatment plant to accommodate both domestic and trade waste from the town," they said.

"This will be necessary to comprehensively address odour issues associated with the sewage treatment plant.

"This includes better systems to handle waste from the meatworks and to manage any odour involved."

The spokesperson said the plant upgrade would take "several years" to complete.

"In the short term, TasWater wants to understand the current issues surrounding odour and to determine what measures can be implemented to improve the situation for the community," they said.

TasWaster urged residents to contact them on 136 992 if they notice odour, or an increased presence of odour.
