That's what the inaugural Laughs of Launnie has turned into, after it began with stand-up comedian Chris Franklin wanting to get a few of friends down for a beer and a few shows.
Kicking off an Monday, March 18, the comedy festival will present at least one hour-long set from each comedian, as well as a range of special events.
And even though 2019 is its first outing, Franklin aims to make it a regular event on the festival route - filling the 10-day gap between the Adelaide Fringe and the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
"For 20 years, there's been 10 days when international comedians have just been sitting around, wanting to work," he said.
"I spoke to a businessman friend of mine, and he helped turn Laughs of Launnie into what it is now."
IN OTHER NEWS:
If the sheer scale of the festival feels a little intimidating, Franklin has a suggestion: come to the galas.
Between the Opening Night Gala on Monday, March 18, and the Ronald McDonald House Charity Gala on Tuesday, March 19, audiences can taste a little bite of all 32 comedians, before deciding who they want to eat up for a full course.
For Franklin, he's looking forward to 2018 Best Stand Up UK winner Andy Askins.
"He's an unassuming little fellow who comes out with some amazing stuff - you don't expect a fellow who looks like him to say what he says, is the best way to put it," he laughed.
And the galas are only the start, with other special events including:
The Ashes
The Brits take on the Aussies in this "five-test series" that will see the audience micced up for the "laugh metre" - marked with one, two, four, or six runs, to be measured during each competitor's "seven minute innings". This is cricket, so to counter any accusations of impropriety, an independent umpire (from Canada) will tally.
Pub Crawl
This trek through the heart of town will take beer-and-comedy fans to five of Launceston's most iconic watering holes (and one new one), where a comedian will be waiting to guarantee they go home with a smile.
Bus Tour
Attendees will pile onto a bus in the Inveresk car park, before being ferried to a comedian waiting for them "some of the most amazing places the area has to offer". At seven hours, this event is a big commitment to laughs, views, and general revelry.
