The T23 website was launched on Saturday in an event described as having "nothing to do with politics", however three Nationals politicians and a candidate were present with no representatives from other parties, AFL Tasmania or football clubs.

The website encourages people to sign up for free to demonstrate why Tasmania should have AFL and AFLW teams by 2023 in a "show of support" to be presented to the AFL.

Mr Martin said four years was a realistic timeframe, despite previous attempts including one that got Mars on board as a financial backer failing.

"In the next couple of years the AFL are looking at signing up the TV rights, and the state government are looking at negotiating a new contract with North Melbourne and Hawthorn," he said.

"If there is no contingent plan in there for a Tasmanian team, we will have to wait another five or six or seven years again."

Prominent Tasmanian economist Saul Eslake was featured on the website as a committee member, along with Mr Martin and Nationals leader Michael McCormack.

The Tasmanian Government established the Football Tasmania Board in November, combining all football bodies together with the ultimate goal of achieving a Tasmanian AFL team.

A Legislative Council inquiry is also under way to investigate the matter.

Mr Martin moved a motion in the Senate last year seeking support for a Tasmanian AFL team, which was approved unanimously.

He said their website and Facebook page were building on this, and it would work alongside the board and inquiry that were occurring at a state level.

Mr Martin said the state government spends $8 million each bringing Hawthorn and North Melbourne to Tasmania to host games, and this funding should instead be put towards a standalone team.

Labor promised $25 million in July for "seed funding" for an AFL team in Tasmania. The Nationals' website launch did not include funding.

Member for Bass Ross Hart said it was an "underwhelming" announcement and the Commonwealth should instead be supporting both local football and pushing towards a team in the AFL.

"There's no use having an AFL Tasmania team unless we support our local footy teams," he said.

"There needs to be a belts and braces approach to football and sport generally.

"(2023) does represent an opportunity, but all of this presupposes that there is a successful business case that can be mounted."
