The website, www.familyviolencelaw.gov.au, uses interactive illustrations and explanations to make difficult legal concepts easier to understand, as well as acting as a hub for information about Legal Aid's free Family Advocacy and Support Service.

Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania acting-director Kristen Wylie said with more and more people representing themselves, FASS filled a real gap in the system.

"People are getting targeted help for their family law problem and instead of feeling lost, they understand the court process. It is incredibly empowering," Ms Wylie said.

"The introduction of an integrated system where people's social and legal needs are met together makes a difference to what happens in court, but also their lives after court."

Ms Wylie said people were supported and become more confident in navigating the system.

The website was developed by Domestic Violence Unit of Legal Aid NSW and provides information about family law, child protection and domestic violence protection orders.

The project was funded by the federal government and was developed with input from each state and territory, as well as survivors of domestic and family violence.

National Legal Aid chairman Dr John Boersig said navigating multiple court systems and jurisdictions could be confusing, especially for people affected by domestic and family violence.

“This website is designed as a starting point to give simple, clear information to people affected by domestic and family violence, trying to traverse these different systems,” he said.

“The aim is to empower people through information, and highlights the importance of getting early legal advice.”
