Penstock Lagoon is popular once again with many fly fishers, some casting from shore, but most in boats looking for trout on the move.

But some northern anglers, especially those fishing Penstock Lagoon, are warned to beware of oversized vehicles on the Central Plateau carrying parts to the Cattle Hill Wind Farm near Waddamana via the Midlands Highway, the Highland Lakes Road from Melton Mowbray and the Northern Waddamana Road.

Most convoys, which began last week, are likely to be moving between 6am and noon, Mondays to Saturdays, for the next six months.

Drivers are asked to be careful and to follow directions given from pilot and escort vehicles.

More cheerful is the advice from the Parks and Wildlife Service that the previously-closed walking and 4WD tracks in the Central Plateau Conservation Area have been re-opened.

Meanwhile, Craigbourne Dam water is low enough to expose all of its boat ramp, but one angler casting lures from a kayak last Monday boated a hefty brownie and then a nice rainbow trout.

Down East commercial divers have increased efforts to harvest damaging sea urchins that have been stripping vital kelp from reefs.

In the north east, anglers fishing bait at the mouth of Pipers River over the holiday weekend were pleased with catches of cocky salmon and mullet, not huge fish but welcomed.

Closer to home, the Tailrace of the Trevallyn Power Station is not only popular with pelicans but has had schools of fish taking to the air, especially along its northern bank.
