Crews from Legana, Gravelly Beach and Bridgenorth are responding, with two light tankers, three medium tankers, two heavy tankers and three light rotary wings are working to extinguish the Frankford Road fire.
A TFS spokeswoman said bulldozers were also supporting ground efforts.
TFS has issued advice for people living at Lanena, Rosevears, Grindelwald, Bridgenorth, Legana and Notley Hills;
- Well prepared homes are defendable in these conditions;
- If you are not prepared for a bushfire, think about leaving for a safe place if it gets more dangerous; and
- If your family has made a bushfire survival plan, check it now.
The fire is producing a lot of smoke and is quite visible to neighbouring communities. TFS recommends people with medical conditions have a personal plan available.
Police officers are conducting traffic near the fire which is located between Long Plains Road and the West Tamar Highway.
The fire at the Northern Tasmanian town was first reported about 1.30pm on Monday.
TFS said there was no immediate threat, but fires under these conditions could be difficult to control.
Exeter town centre is a 25-minute drive north of Launceston.
