Some regional groups have said sites named so far have received titles under the "reconstructed" palawa kani language which they believed did not reflect the language spoken by different tribes.

But TAC palawa kani program co-ordinator Annie Reynolds said this was misleading and belied the centre's 30 years of hard work in the linguistic and historical retrieval of traditional Tasmanian languages.

"It's hard to understand how a simple word like reconstructed can be so misunderstood," she said.

Ms Reynolds said the methods employed by the organisation to gather representations of an original word employed analysis of original sounds and spellings of the language used by European recorders which were then cross-referenced with all available recorded meanings.

She said from this evidence bore a result which was the closest possible interpretation of each original word.

"There are no traditional languages spoken in Tasmania today," Ms Reynolds said.

"It is not possible to revive any one of the original Tasmanian languages as not enough remains of any one of them in the records."

She said place names, particularly on the West Coast, were derived from the region's traditional languages as they were shared directly by Aboriginal people with those Europeans who recorded them at the time.

Ms Reynolds said it was decided at statewide meetings during the 1990s to encapsulate all remaining documented languages into the newly named palawa kani language which was predominantly drawn from the North-East as most material was recorded there.

She said all place and tribe names were always derived directly from the language of the place or tribe itself, wherever evidence existed for that.

The state government is reviewing Aboriginal titles attached to English-named sites.

A final report on dual-names is due to be released later this year.
