Comedian and host of The Weekly and Tomorrow Tonight, Pickering will be making his way to Tasmania to perform his new show: Us vs Them at Hobart's Spiegeltent.

"The show's really about the fact that I feel like the world has gotten a bit meaner and people are arguing more than they used to," Pickering said.

"I think it's because we keep trying to split ourselves into teams all the time.

"I think we can do a lot better than that if we take some of the aggression and anger out of the world and that's sort of what the shows about.

"Don't worry, I don't think I'm genuinely going to bring peace to society."

When it comes to the internet's role in dividing people, Pickering likens our use of it to a driver who hasn't got their licence.

"The internet overall is very good for the world, but I think we started to use it without learning how to use it," he said.

"You have to get your licence before you drive a car but we all started driving the internet before we knew what we were doing.

"It's no wonder we keep crashing into each other."

Pickering has performed a few times in Tasmania in both Hobart and Launceston.

"There are some cheap and nasty comedians that might pay out on Tasmania, but that's definitely not what I do," Pickering jested.

"Tassie crowds are genuinely some of my favourite crowds, so I could not be happier to be coming back.

"Literally one of my favourite gigs to do and I've got a brand new show that I really like and I reckon it's gonna be a really good time."

Pickering notes that the rivalry between Hobart and Launceston might play a role in his material for Us vs Them.

"I'm not sure how the tribes [Launceston and Hobart] feel about each other but my experience is that there's always a rivalry between two places like that," he said.

"That's one of the great things about being a comedian is you get to visit any where and admittedly take the piss out of it but also get to know places really well and see the good side."

At the end of the night, Pickering hopes that audiences find themselves a little closer to one another than before.

"What I'll say about comedy is that it's a way to get a bunch of people in a room and have a laugh about some things," Pickering said

"I don't think you can make jokes unless you get close to the truth and just by having a big group in a room laugh with you about the same thing may remind you that we're not all as divided as politicians or the news would like to portray us as."
