Emergency services were called to Church Street about 8.15pm on Tuesday with reports a green Mitsubishi Lancer was fully ablaze.
It had come to rest against a kerb at the end of the one-way street, just near an embankment that had several properties at the bottom and nearby.
Acting station officer Tony Johnson said it appeared the car - which had no number plates - was stolen and set on fire as the fire had originated in the back seat.
He said the car had rolled downhill from another part of the street.
"It's very lucky this car didn't end up in a house or it could have been much worse," Mr Johnson said.
Police were also on the scene investigating.
Anyone with information about the fire can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
