The Blackstone Heights 19-year-old will represent Australia in the IFA world cup proper in August, where he will take on the likes of the United States, Scotland and home nation China. 

Linger, who has been the state's Northern development officer for the past five months, was selected following impressive performances at the futsal national championships in Penrith earlier this year. 

He and 2018 Australian Futsal Association all star five goalkeeper Bardia Solati are the sole Tasmanians in Australia's 12-man squad.

"I coached [juniors] first week of the national club championships and then played the next week - I played 13-odd games in three days because I had to play the youth men's and the open men's," Linger said. 

"From there they select tour teams and Australian representative teams and so a couple of my mates got selected for the men's touring team.

"I didn't get a letter or anything so was a bit concerned I didn't do well enough, and a couple of days after that I got the China letter."

With the tournament still half a year away, the former St Pats and Sacred Heart student will keep in shape by lining up for Launceston City's NPL Tasmania side, for whom he has made 30 appearances in the past three seasons after being named under-18 best and fairest in 2015. 

"I’ve been playing there right through juniors when I was six and moved over to the senior club when I was about 15, so I’ve been playing NPL for the past three or four years.

"I'm playing again this year which is good - I play backline, up front and in the midfield, so I play everywhere."

Linger is equally flexible on the futsal court, but is generally employed in the role of target man.

At international level games are played on a surface the size of two basketball courts - double the size of a typical futsal court.

But it's not just the courts that will be bigger at the world cup - Linger is preparing to compete against and alongside bigger names and talents. 

"I’m pretty excited to go - some of the guys that are in my ream are people I’ve looked up to playing against and just watching play which is cool," he said.

"The Newcastle Titans team and the Atletico team in Brisbane ... watching those players play, they're all really good and you want to be like them, but now I get to play alongside them which is really cool."
