The incident occurred on Monday when the woman attempted to intervene in an altercation between two students about 1pm.

An Education Department spokesman praised the response of Port Dalrymple's senior staff.

"The incident was dealt with efficiently by senior staff and followed established protocols which sought to minimise the impact on students, staff and community. As a result, the incident was localised and only witnessed by a few people," the spokesman said.

A team of professional support staff, including the psychologist and the student support leader, were on site all day on Tuesday to provide support to staff and students.

"A system was put in place to ensure that those students and staff directly affected were given priority access. The school followed DoE disciplinary policy in response to the students’ behaviour," the spokesman said.

Tasmania Police confirmed on Tuesday they were investigating the incident and were called to the school about 1.40pm on Monday, February 18.

The injured woman was taken to George Town Medical Centre but was released later that day. The extent of her injuries is unknown. 

Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said there was "no place for inappropriate, bullying or violent behaviour" in Tasmanian public schoolyards.

"Every school has an important role to play in promoting and teaching respectful behaviour however this is also a whole-of-community issue which requires a whole-of-community response."

Mr Rockliff said the state government was committed to taking action to address antisocial behaviour in schools, including the development of a student wellbeing strategy and increasing support and resources for students and teachers.
