Ms Giddings said she looked forward to working with the organisation having held the health portfolio for more the five years from 2006 election.
She said she intended to drive hospital-based doctors, general practitioners and specialists to the forefront of debate over patient care and current pressures on the state's health system.
“As Health Minister, I loved working with the health sector and I was proud to work with doctors to help drive reform to our health system through the Tasmania Health Plan," she said.
“In this new role, I look forward to working with doctors to provide constructive advice to government on how to improve our health system as well as provide support to doctors in their everyday working lives.
“There are many issues confronting our health system across the preventative, primary and acute sectors as demand for services increases."
Current-serving chief executive Tony Steven will soon step down after a decade in the role.
Former Labor Premier and Health Minister Doug Lowe once served as the AMA's state executive director.
