Is he on a self-destruct mission?
The banks have been found to have committed inexcusable failures of huge magnitudes and have been allowed to proceed unchallenged.
And now he claims that he “rushing the laws are reckless” he personally voted against the Royal Commission in the first place.
Mr Morrison, tread carefully you are a shining light in the Federal Liberal Party do not stuff it up with poor judgement, you need credibility.
The banks have crippled thousands of people with poor advise and deceit and now you want to give them more time.
Seeing the obvious direction of the Royal Commission new laws should have been a least discussed, to make up for your failure.
Give yourself a chance at the coming elections sit for another two weeks, delaying would be suicide.
It is what the voters want.
Peter Doddy, Trevallyn.
Chudleigh Show
My wife and I visited the Chudleigh Show for a few hours on Saturday and we witnessed a variety of activities and events.
The organisers and participants should be very proud of their efforts. In particular, I was so impressed with your young community members and the maturity they showed in participating and judging events whether it was the woodchopping, equestrian, cattle showing or muffin baking.
As one great example of recognising all participants, I listened to the commentary when the judging took place around the dairy and beef cattle events and this was very informative, articulate and encouraging to all participants by the young judges.
One hundred and thirty years on, we are in great hands.
Michael Hodder, Victoria.
Community in mourning
The kid’s play equipment didn’t put up much resistance against the bulldozer.
The big old trees didn’t put up much resistance against the chainsaws.
In a cloud of dust and sawdust, the last green recreational space in inner Launceston has expired as the East Launceston Oval fell to the developer’s greed.
The local community didn’t put up much resistance – they didn’t speak to the Minister (he refused, despite the 700-signatory petition), and when they reminded the City of Launceston council of their boast about protecting green space, they didn’t hear.
The local community members who built the playground with their own toil and tools didn’t put up much resistance, but I did spy a tear in some old eyes. The machine that is state and local government simply roll over communities without a thought.
Bob Cohen, East Launceston.
Sacrilege and Beauty
I was absolutely appalled at the desecration of Saint Matthias Church at Windermere and the stealing of items including the sacred communion vessels.
I really feel God does not take such sacrilege lightly, so thieves look for more than just a call from the police.
Secondly, if you have not visited or attended a service at Saint Paul’s at Low Head (The Sunday Examiner, February 17) you have not seen one of the most beautiful churches in Australia. The stained-glass windows are absolutely mind-blowing, as is the whole interior. I think the key can be obtained from Ainslie House, but after what has happened at Windermere, they may be reluctant to let you have it.
Malcolm Scott, Newstead.
Scott Morrison
You would have to think Scott Morrison is doing his absolute best to advertise to the world of semi-retired people smugglers that now would be a really good time to try and come to Australia again.
His hysterical outbursts are all but pleading for as many as possible to give it a go now, just because there has been a small, almost irrelevant change to the laws.
There isn’t an issue, but he is doing his level best to create an issue. I bet he prays for a boat to come across the horizon. Responsible prime ministerial behaviour in the interest of the nation – I think not.
If he wants a crisis, he should focus on the underfunding and understaffing of aged care institutions, at least that tragedy is a real and present.
M. Fyfe, Riverside.
Labor's Tax Plan
It is important to address misinformation about Labor’s policy to crack down on the tax loophole that gives a tax refund to people who don’t pay income tax.
Under our plan, no-one pays a single cent more tax, no-one loses a single cent from share dividends and no-one loses a single cent from their super contributions.
Superannuation was designed to be drawn down over time, not preserved as a mountain of wealth.
If some retirees prefer to limit their income to dividend payments from their investments that’s fine, but they should not expect to be subsidised with government revenue, in the form of excess franking credits, when they have access to their own wealth.
Pensioners are subject to strict income and assets tests in order to access a maximum of $24,000 a year from the government.
It is therefore unfair that wealthy retirees can access many multiples of this while owning hundreds of thousands of dollar of shares.
This unfair loophole overwhelmingly benefits people and funds worth more than $1 million and will soon cost the budget $8 billion each year. That is more than what the federal government spends on schools.
If elected, Labor will close this unfair tax loophole because our priority is health and schools.
Brian Mitchell, federal Labor member for Lyons.
