Golconda Road, between Lilydale and Lebrina, has a rural road limit of 100km/h which could be reduced to 80km/h if a motion is passed by the City of Launceston council.
The agenda said community concerns had been raised with the council about the road.
Councillors have received correspondence from Windermere MLC Ivan Dean and a letter from Tasmania Police suggesting the speed limit be reduced.
A “major section” of the road, between Bacala and Denison Gorge roads, has not been improved recently, the council’s agenda said.
Along with the three fatal crashes, one serious crash and 16 other incidents on the road have occurred in the past five years.
“It can be seen, from the data, that the number of crashes in the section between Farrellys Road and Denison Gorge Road is increasing both in number and severity,” the agenda said.
“The crash record for Golconda Road would suggest a reduction in speed limit is necessary, but this needs to respect the minimum lengths specified in the Australian Standard.”
A design has been completed to upgrade Golconda Road between Bacala and Denison Gorge roads, with an estimated cost of $1.2 million. The cost for the section between Farrellys and Denison Gorge roads is about $400,000 and a bid for Black Spot funding of $150,000 for 2019-20 has been submitted.
The council will discuss the proposal on Thursday.
