Riverside Primary grade five student Addis was half the height, and half the age, of some of his competitors.
He raced alongside university student James Belstead, 20, who has three times qualified for national swimming championships, and amiable former Tasmanian Pacific School Games swim team captain Marcus Darko, 17.
Addis said afterwards: “I was worried at first but I just tried my best.
“The older boys made some funny jokes, and in the end it was fun.
“I just did my race and I was happy about it.”
Addis, who claimed a bronze medal for his valiant efforts, was one of about 120 swimmers from around the state who took part in the annual medal meet in the 33m outdoor pool on Saturday.
The blend of youth and experience, exemplified in Addis’s butterfly race, was what made the meet so special, according to Trent Hadley.
Hadley, who coaches Addis, was on race starter duties at the event.
“It’s inclusive,” he said as he surveyed the packed grandstand and crowded spectator areas.
“Everyone can have a go, whether you are a state champion, or a fitness swimmer or a novice. It is open to all.”
Riverside Aquatic Club president Peter Wall echoed these sentiments.
“The club’s underlying philosophy is to provide the opportunity for kids to swim, regardless of their ability,” he said.
“This meet gives them the chance to experience the excitement of competitive racing and an opportunity to practise before the upcoming school swimming carnivals.
“We are thrilled with how well it continues to be supported.”
He thanked the sponsors as well as the competitors and their parents, Riverside Lions Club, Trent and Nicole Hadley (operators of the Riverside pool), West Tamar Council, officiating expert Don Blew, the hard-working volunteers of the Riverside Aquatic Club, and everyone else who had contributed to the popular popularity and success.
