The Ross Bridge is still over uncertain water when it comes to National Heritage listing, after a submission from the Northern Midlands Council last year.

Northern Midlands Mayor Mary Knowles said though council was still waiting to hear back about the submission – prepared in February 2018 – they were still hopeful.
“We’re still waiting on the outcome of our submission, so hopefully no news is good news!” Cr Knowles said.

“This amazing sandstone bridge, completed in 1836, is the third oldest in Australia still in use, designed by John Lee Archer it was constructed with convict labour and is a treasure in the beautiful historic village of Ross.
“The convicts included James Colbeck and Daniel Herbert who is credited with the exquisite carvings on the sides of the bridge.”
The bridge was added to the Register of the National Estate in 1978 and is also listed in the Tasmanian Heritage Register. “It is about time it gains the recognition it truly deserves,” Cr Knowles said.
