Festival organiser Jesse Higgs confirmed a patron presented to St John Ambulance staff and was taken to the Launceston General Hospital for observation. 

“We were informed that it was not a drug overdose but the patron was showing signs of physical distress, so their friends took them to the onsite medical team,” Mr Higgs said. 

Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Dean McMahon said officers assisted paramedics with the man. 

“He drank the liquid from his vapor,” Acting Inspector McMahon said.

Mr Higgs said the man’s friends did exactly as organisers asked them to do.

“They trusted their instincts and looked after their mate,” he said.

“We applaud their behaviour and encourage all of our PITP community to follow their example.”

St John Ambulance Tasmania chief executive Ross Byrne said he had been in contact with Party in the Paddock organisers, who confirmed one patron had been hospitalised, but not as the result of an overdose.

“We only had one person taken to hospital,” he said.

"There was no OD - if there was, it wasn't through St John's."

The man was discharged from hospital on Friday morning. 

Mr Byrne said more than 60 St John Ambulance volunteers ranging from nurses, paramedics and doctors were rostered on to attend the festival from Thursday to Sunday. 

The festival is held at White Hills, which is about a 20-minute drive from Launceston.

Police have a strong presence at the festival, with a number of uniformed and plain-clothed officers patrolling. 

Acting Inspector McMahon said Party in the Paddock was a pretty good festival in the sense that most patrons were well-behaved. 

About 8000 people were expected to attend the festival from February 7 to 10.

Acting Inspector McMahon said police patrolling the event had no problems on Thursday and only evicted three people on Friday afternoon.
