From the once pick-up game that has grown off outdoor asphalt courts, three-on-three is now to basketball what Twenty20 is to cricket.
“So three-on-three is just a new type of basketball that has been brought in,” Basketball Tasmania development North officer Brad Kann said.
“It’s rapidly growing in popularity across the world.”
So much so that the sport is heading to next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Basketball Tasmania will join the movement on Saturday at its first-ever Big Hustle three-on-three tournament.
The winners from more than 300 players and 77 teams in the male and female under-14s, 16s, 18s and open competitions will advance to the nationals in Geelong.
Kann called the three-on-three game a “very inclusive brand of basketball”.
“The support we’ve had has just been overwhelming,” Kann said.
“We have had teams from across the state everywhere.”
Players attending include a number from the Launceston Tornadoes and North West Thunder squads.
Individual players will accrue points and ranked globally for scoring, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
