The midfielder from Wynyard, whose twin sister Libby is also on the Roos’ list, was named as an emergency when the teams dropped on Thursday for the clash with Greater Western Sydney at Drummoyne Oval, but match-ups could see the 17-year-old come in at the last minute.
“With Chloe, her ability to learn as when you explain something to her you can see she goes out and tries to execute what you are teaching,’’ Gowans said of the one thing that had got the teenager so close to a debut early in the season.
“(Fellow Tasmanian) Nicole Bresnehan is the same, and they are just sponges and you see where Nicole is at is fantastic, and I don’t think Chloe is that far off her, it’s just she’s up against Emma Kearney, Ash Riddell and Jamie Stanton, which is a much harder group to beak into then Nic.”
Gowans has named his Tasmanian trio from Sunday’s win over Carlton (vice-captain Brittany Gibson, Emma Humphries and Nicole Bresnehan) for the trip to Sydney, with Gibson again set to have a role in defence after starring against the Blues.
That role differed from her traditional jobs in attack or the midfield.
“When you watch her she is a naturally aggressive running player, and watching her at training I was thinking how powerful she could be offensively if she was behind the ball,’’ Gowans said.
“People usually think of offensive back-lines with people like Jess Duffin who are really good ball users, but Britt gives you something that other players don’t and that is that aggressive way of getting the ball forward.
“The game just calls for a player like that to be behind the ball and just bash in and win it and get it long, and she does that.
“She is absolutely a forward option for us as well and she will play at times there, but I just think her best natural position is to put her behind the ball and let her run and let her dictate play.”
Gibson has been named on the half-back flank, Humphries in the back-pocket and Bresnehan on the interchange bench.
Gowans believed that the maturity his star-studded group showed in embracing last week’s win would hold them in good stead.
But now there is a benchmark, he said he was keen to either match it or set that bar even higher on Friday.
“We kicked inaccurately (7.10), but the actual style of play and ball movement and the way we put pressure on the opposition to win the ball back when we had it was really good to be honest,’’ he said.
“Usually as a coach you are always trying to look for improvement, and we have some stuff to work on, but this is a pretty good platform to set as your benchmark in round 1.”
Friday’s 7.15pm contest against the Giants will also present a unique challenge for his group as it will be the first Friday night contest for all, and first night contest for majority.
