She remained in the labour camp until the end of the Second World War when she was transferred to a displacement camp.
It was there that Nina met her husband – a Pole by the name of Stanislaw Brzeski.
After marrying in 1949, the couple emigrated to Australia and after traveling through Tasmania Stanislaw and Nina Brzeski built a house and settled in St Leonards.
It was in Tasmania Nina and Stanislaw raised two children: Richard Brzeski and Helen [now Kirkis].
Both Nina and Stanislaw were highly active in the garden, growing vegetables that they would then share with family and neighbours.
Stanislaw Brzeski passed away in 2001.
Nina’s daughter-in-law Dianna Brzeski said Nina had always said what lucky people they were to be living in Australia.
“She loves Tasmania, and she loves Australia,” Dianna Brzeski.
“She’s always said it’s a fantastic place, and so did father too.”
Nina will celebrate her birthday on Saturday with family, many of whom are travelling from interstate.
