Foodworks hired Mount Isa charter company Barkly Aviation to fly in supplies, as floodwaters cut off its normal supply routes.
The first shipment of fruit, vegetables and meat arrived at 7pm on Sunday February 3, with more milk, fruit and vegetables and perishables planned for Monday; weather permitting.
Foodworks Cloncurry is a locally owned business and said it understands the needs of the community and would continue to make available goods to maintain the wellbeing of the people that live in the region.
“We currently have trucks stacked at Richmond, McKinlay and Winton with pallets of groceries waiting ready for floods to go down. We also have orders ready for dispatch from Brisbane and Townsville when roads available,” director Ed Morrison said.
“We have not been contacted by any Government agency to see how our supplies have been going or even to see what stock we have got.
“We will need assistance to ensure that we can get supplies to our aircraft at Townsville airport when it opens. To do this we have contacted the local mayor Greg Campbell and local MP Robbie Katter to help coordinate this.
“Most people in the town and area have stock up well and we have a large supply on hand so need to panic. But if this continues for another two days then this will change dramatically. We are trying to get ahead of the curve.”
The charter is grounded in Cloncurry this morning waiting for more favourable weather before conducting another flight to Winton.
