The Tasmania Fire Service confirmed Churchill’s Hut was lost in the Gell River fire on Wednesday.
Located near Tim Shea in the south-west, the trappers hut was built in the 1920s by Elias Churchill and was the the location where the last Tasmanian tiger was captured in the 1930s.
Weeks of significant firefighting efforts to protect Churchill's Hut were unsuccessful.
The sprinkler system similar to that which protected Lake Rhona's sensitive vegetation earlier in the month were not able to stop the fire from impacting the hut.
The hut was destroyed by fire when conditions became unsafe for firefighters who had to leave the area.
Nearby critical communications infrastructure at Tim Shea was successfully defended.
A watch an act alert is in place for the Gell River fire at Maydena, Tyenna, Mount Field and National Park.
Up to date fire information can be found on the Tasmania Fire Service website or by listening to ABC local radio.
