The call comes after five people were killed on Tasmanian roads during the Christmas period.
Many Northern Tasmanians are gearing up for a busy long weekend, with police expected big numbers to head to popular holiday destinations along the East Coast.
Acting Inspector Jason Jones said they want everyone to get to their destination and home safely.
“Over the last few years everyone has been pretty well behaved, but due to us having quite a bad Christmas/New Year period we want to really enforce traffic safety,” he said.
A number of police operations will be undertaken over the long weekend, including random breath and drug testing and speed enforcement operations at popular holiday destinations and in Launceston.
Acting Inspector Jones also reminded road users to drive to the conditions. especially with changing weather conditions.
“When we say you need to concentrate on speed it also means you need to drive to conditions,” he said.
Police will be out in numbers from January 25 to 28, focusing on the fatal five contributors to road deaths which are speed, seatbelts, alcohol and drugs, distraction, and fatigue.
Acting Inspector Jones said drivers should also be aware they can be over the legal blood alcohol limit, especially if they’re probationary drivers, even if they come back for their car the next day.
