Lyon's 49-wicket haul in Tests last year - just three behind pace setter Kagiso Rabada - was enough to land him a spot in the red-ball squad, while no Australians were included in the 50-over team of 2018.

Australia finished 2018 with just three Test wins - its fewest in a calendar year since 1996 - and won just 15 of their 41 completed fixtures across all formats.

That run of poor form was illustrated in the ICC's honours lists, with regular team of the year entries David Warner (four times) and Steve Smith (three) both serving suspensions.

It marks the first time since 2012 that at least two Australians haven't featured in the Test team and is the country's first ODI snub since 2009.

It is a far cry from Australia's dominance in 2006, when Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee all made the cut.

However it isn't without precedence, with no Australians selected in the 2011 Test side and only Simon Katich voted in the previous year.

Virat Kohli's stellar 12 months ensured he made history as the first player to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year, Test and ODI player of the year gongs.

The Indian captain scored 1322 Test runs at an average of 55.08 and 1202 ODI runs at 133.55 in 2018 as India finished the year No.1 and No.2 in the Test and ODI rankings respectively.

"It has been an amazing year," he said.

"I was able to play in a manner that I would not have imagined."

Kohli was named captain of both 2018 squads, while fast-bowling compatriot Jasprit Bumrah was the only other player to be selected in both sides.

New Zealand trio Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls and opener Tom Latham all made the Test team while India and England each had four members in the limited overs squad.

There was some good news for the out-of-sorts Aaron Finch, who collected the ICC Men's T20I Performance of the Year award for the second time after his world record 172 against Zimbabwe in Harare last July.
