About 74 people took part in a free screening for atrial fibrillation as part of University of Tasmania research project What’s Your Beat.
The project aims to raise awareness of AF – the most common cardiac rhythm abnormality and a leading cause of stroke.
UTAS PhD student and project assistant Ibrahim Jatau said of those who participated, less than 50 per cent understood what AF was or how to recognise the symptoms.
“This was targeted at people who are older than 65, who are most at risk,” he said.
“We have had a terrific response. Those with high blood pressure or with symptoms of AF, were referred to see a GP.”
Participant Grace Moleney of South Launceston said it was an easy check, that could make a big difference.
“I am over 65, so it was on my radar,” she said.
“My heart is good, but I have high blood pressure – so I will follow it up with my GP.”
