The Demons will resume at 2-31 with coach Callan Morse on 10 and Joseph Chaplin on five, still requiring another 214 runs to claim first innings points.
Mountaineers coach Marc Simonds said the focus for his side would be to put the Demons batsmen under pressure from the first ball of the day.
“We have identified Morsey (Callan Morse) is probably their key and a lot of pressure will fall on him, not only this game, but for probably the rest of the year,” Simonds said.
“He normally comes good when it comes to red ball cricket, so our focus will be to be switched on from ball one and if we can get some early wickets and get right into that middle order, hopefully the results will fall our way.
“But two-day cricket is a funny game, we have the runs on the board and they have to get them.”
The Mountaineers batting innings was led by Jordan Marshall’s 90 and 63 from Alex King, who maintained a fast run rate to compile their 244 from 68.3 overs.
Simonds said it was great for Marshall and King to get away for good scores and it was key that they were able to find support across the order.
“Jordy batted terrifically to score his 90 and I am sure he was disappointed he couldn’t crack the three figures and he performed his duties and Alex did so as well.
“But there are guys that are making 20s, 30s and 40s and it is just making sure we are all contributing with the bat and putting good scores on the board.”
At UCI Oval, Ulverstone will resume at 5-71 chasing Devonport’s first innings total of 162.
Wynyard will be chasing quick wickets to dent the Burnie Hurricanes’ push for an outright victory.
The Hurricanes finished day one at 5-133, leading by 15 after the Blues were dismissed by 118.
