The property expansion was tabled at the West Tamar Council meeting on Tuesday at the request of owner Rowena Austin.

Ms Austin spoke during public question time at the meeting and said she requested for the development to be tabled after reading resident representations.

“We are really excited about the development and we hope that the community will be too,” she said.

Como is a property located at Cherry Point at West Tamar and can be seen from the Batman Bridge.

It has significant historical significance and has once entertained Prime Ministers, sporting champions and international celebrities.

Resident Don McGuiness spoke out against the expansion during public question time primarily because of the perceived overcrop of the master bedroom onto the path.

“We have a responsibility to protect the amenity of the West Tamar,” he said.

“At the apex of the point will be a master bedroom, only a few metres from the path.”

Councillor Richard Ireland, who seconded the motion, said the privacy of the path walkers was irrelevant for the council’s decision on the extension.

“The privacy should be for the house, not the path,” he said.

Councillor Rick Shegog said he thought the expansion was a “wonderful development” that would beautify the area and breathe new life into the property.

“As far as the outcrop of the master bedroom onto the path is concerned, that is irrelevant,” he said.

Ms Austin said the architects she had commissioned for the property expansion had not done a project in Tasmania before but were highly celebrated.

“We could either do a pastiche of the past or do something new, for the future,” she said.

The development application was approved unanimously at the meeting, with all councillors who spoke expressing support for the expansion.
