Though the features desired depend a little on how it is planned to be used – a private place to escape from the world, or an investment – one such Falmouth property caters to both crowds.
If it could even be called a shack.
Dubbed “The Ocean Retreat”, the four-bedroom four-bathroom property was built in 2011 with luxury in mind, said listing agent Jim Playsted of Knight Frank Tasmania.
Constructed as an investment property by a travel agency specialising in high-end travel, The Retreat overlooks the Tasman Sea with spacious rooms and glassed walls.

With a fully-equipped modern galley kitchen and handmade 10-seat dining table, it is billed as an “entertainer’s delight” for those looking to get closer to the fresh seafood, beaches, and lifestyle the East-Coast is known for.
A 10-minute drive will get potential buyers to Scamander, with St Marys, St Helens or Bicheno all about 30 minutes or less away.
The exterior is clad in Tasmanian Sassafras timber. Beneath the property is storage for 70,000 litres of fresh water.
It even boasts a pool for when the beach is slightly too far to walk.
“As best they could they built low-maintenance,” Mr Playsted added. “It’s stood the test of time pretty well in that salty environment”.
“You can key the rooms shut, so you can rent out rooms and lock the others – the rental yield reflects that.”
The agency have had about 100 inquiries from around the country, with a “steady flow” of inspections.
“They’re coming in from Sydney and Brisbane. We’ve had one from Adelaide too, but not Perth yet.”
Mr Playsted joked that a number of those inquiring had asked about the nearest infrastructure.
“That’s a bit of an oxymoron,” he laughed. “If you want to be remote you have to be self-contained.”
“But the answer is just minutes up the road,” he added.
