Food vans
SPEAKING from the experience of having run a restaurant for a number of years, allowing food vans in the mall will have a very detrimental effect on the current food businesses in the area.

It needs to be understood general businesses in static locations have taken out expensive leases on the properties they operate from and, in addition, pay the property owner’s costs and outgoings such as rates and maintenance.
Leases are generally for a period of five years and the operators are legally obliged to maintain payments for the full term of the lease.
This is whether they can turn a profit or not.
They open their businesses day in and day out.
These business owners have made large investments equipping their premises right down to the tables and chairs their patrons use.
Staff are employed, tables are cleaned and floors swept.
These business owners establish relationships with the community regularly assisting in sponsorships, charity and other events.
In contrast, mobile food vans can come and go as they please to cherry pick busy thoroughfares at the most popular times.
If a better opportunity arises elsewhere they are off.
Food van operators don’t even supply tables and chairs for their customers or clean up their customers discarded cups and plates.
This is left to be done and paid for by others, usually the ratepayers.
Council needs to consider the real costs that will be placed on the community by this ill-conceived proposal.

Rising temperatures
IT IS reported that Australia’s record-breaking run of rising temperatures continues with nine of the 10 warmest years occurring since 2005.
I never cease to be amazed that this sort of information does not disturb the willful ignorance of the climate change deniers.
What is undeniable is that the deniers make no useful contribution in forging a better world future.
Unfortunately, in Australia this century, the politicians have been abysmally neglectful in providing an adequate response to the most serious threat to our planet.
And what has happened to this country that reels at the idea of leading the way?
What we do as individuals and as a nation does make a difference.

THE teen Saudi, Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, now heads to Canada as a refugee, a compassionate country.

Going Vegan
I THINK it’s great that people want to go vegan and save the chickens.
I have no problem with that at all as I think it’s humane.
Why then aren’t people prepared to save unborn babies?
Our selfish society is devolving in front of our very eyes.
