Talking About... developer and From Heartache to Hope facilitator Wendy French said the free session would provide information for anyone impacted by suicide loss, regardless of when or where.

“We’re hoping it will show people a little more about how to help, and how to react … and allow people to gain and understanding about the reactions they’re having,” she said.

More than 2500 Australians a year die by suicide, with many more making non-fatal attempts or considering ending their life.

“It can impact the whole community,” Ms French said.

“It’s different to any other type of loss.”

Ms French said she hoped the community session would help to improve the community’s knowledge of trauma symptoms, the responses and reactions that people may have to loss and grief, and to understand needs for self care and personal well-being.

She said the session would discuss topics such as traumatic loss, the journey of bereavement and grief, the needs of the bereaved, ways to support yourself and those bereaved, and suggestions for self care.

The session would also involve critical reflection on personal values and beliefs about trauma, crisis, loss, and grieving.

The session is open to anyone in the community. However, Ms French said it was unsuitable for people under 15 years of age to attend unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

No registrations are necessary for the session, with all welcome.
