Underworld cancelled their Australian tours due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
“We are sorry to disappoint those of you looking forward to seeing us and wish our friends at Electric Garden and Mona Foma the very best of luck with their festivals,” Underworld said in a statement.
In their own statement, Mona Foma said they were “devo that they’ll [Underworld] no longer perform at our first Mona Foma in Launceston, and shocked by the announcement.”
However, Mona Foma curator Brian Ritchie said PNAU was a natural replacement for Underworld.
“After an extended bout of teeth gnashing, hair pulling, saliva spraying existential turmoil over who could fill Mona Foma’s coveted final slot, we decided the only antidote to our crisis was to party in flamboyant, outrageous, fun, danceable, intercontinental, hedonistic fashion,” he said.
“So we got PNAU.”
PNAU recently won the best dance release at the 2018 ARIAs, and have multiple platinum tracks as well as numerous accolades to their name.
The trio consists of Nick Littlemore, Sam Littlemore and Peter Mayes.
The group said on their Facebook page that they were “honoured” and “stoked” to be added to the Mona Foma lineup.
The trio will be joining the likes of Courtney Barnett, Nakhane, Hanba and WWWater among a stacked lineup to close out the week-long festivities around Mona Foma.
Accompanying PNAU to Launceston will be a full live band as well as New York based singer Kira Divine.
They will be performing at the Inveresk Precinct on Sunday, January 20.
Mona Foma will run from January 13-20 featuring a number of art installations and acts around Launceston.
