Recent Bureau of Statistics results have revealed that Tasmania experienced a 5.3 per cent growth in retail trade during November compared to the same time in 2017. 

Tasmania had the second largest annual growth in retail among states for November.

Retail for the month is now at a series record of $548.5 million.

Executive at Launceston Chamber of Commerce Neil Grose said while this indicates growth for the state, recent business closures in Launceston indicates that it is not universal.

“Several chamber members have indicated that their Christmas trade was below par in terms of turnover in addition to a dropping in the average spend per transaction,” he said.

“This is not universal, but does show a trend to a more cautious consumer market.”
