As part of a fundraiser for Guide Dogs Tasmania, a screening of the ‘dog-mentary’ Pick of the Litter will be held at Star Theatre on Monday, January 14. 

The film follows puppies Patriot, Potomac, Primrose, Poppet and Phil as they are trained to become guide dogs for the blind. 

The film documents the rigorous two-year process from the time the dogs are born, to the challenges and tests they face before making the final cut. 

Guide Dogs Tasmania fundraising coordinator Kristy Wright said the film shared an important message. 

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to create awareness about these amazing dogs, and the vigorous training involved to produce guide dogs that will be the eyes and companions of those who are blind or vision impaired,” she said.

“As well as being highly educational, we think this is a film that all dog and animal lovers should see, as it reinforces the incredible ability of these dogs to keep their handlers mobile, safe and independent.”

There are 21 working guide dogs in Tasmania, all helping to provide their handlers with independence, safety, confidence and companionship.

With a portion of the ticket sales from the night to be donated to Guide Dogs Tasmania, Star Theatre co-owner Paul Lee-Archer said it was a worthy cause they were proud to support. 

“The event fits in well with our focus to remain engaged in the community,” he said.

“We like to support worthwhile organisations like Guide Dogs Tasmania, where we can. Plus from what we have heard, it is a really great film.”

Prior to the screening, Guide Dogs Tasmania ambassador Paris will also be available for pats.
