From January 8, the City of Launceston council introduced the EasyPark smartphone app.

The app can be used to pay for parking in car parks managed by the council, and it on-street meter bays across the city.

EasyPark is free to download and allows users to skip using a meter and pay from anywhere without the hassle of carrying coins.

It also allows users to top-up their parking on-the-go and will send a notification when the parking session is about to expire.

Users will also only have to pay for the time they use.

However, there is a 10 per cent transaction fee when the app is used to pay for parking.

In a comment on Facebook, the council said the fee was charged by the app as it was a commercial enterprise.

Coins will still be accepted in all metres, and electronic car payments were accepted in council car parks.

Launceston mayor Albert van Zetten said the EasyPark system had been a success across the world, and within the state in Hobart, Burnie, and Devonport.

The app will allow people to pay for parking through their smartphone in off-street, single-storey car parks in Bathurst, York, Cimitiere, Willis, and Park streets, Royal Park, River Edge, Inveresk, First Basin, the Launceston Aquatic Centre, and Home Point.

It will not work in the citys multi-storey car parks as card payments were available.

The City of Hobart council recently overhauled its parking system.

Hobarts system included the installation on in-ground sensors to monitor car movement, and replacing on-street parking meter and voucher machines with multi-payment option parking metres at certain car parks.

The system allows users to pay by coin, card, or EasyPark.

However, the council will also enforce a $3 minimum when paying for parking by card.

The move caused a backlash within the community, with a complaint about the change even being lodged to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
