The council’s president, Jim Wilkinson, was elected to Nelson in 1995 but is not seeking re-election.

Ms Ogilvie, 49, a barrister and solicitor with 25 years’ experience, resigned from the Labor Party last year.

Labor’s state secretary Stuart Benson said Labor would not endorse a candidate for Nelson.

“We are re-endorsing Jo Siejka in Pembroke and have an excellent new candidate in Michelle Rippon for Montgomery,” Mr Benson said.

Ms Ogilvie, is the president of the Tasmanian Football Council and is keen to return to politics after losing her seat at the March 2018 election.

“The Legislative Council is a house of review and I have experience with legislation,” she said.

When Mr Wilkinson retires there will be no MLCs with a legal background in the council.

“We need a strategic approach to investment in infrastructure and services, a proper solution to the rental crisis, to tackle the cost of living, rebuild our arts sector and resolve our transport and traffic congestion issues,” Ms Ogilvie said.

Among other matters she said she would be “pushing for proper resourcing of healthcare, establishing new hospital capacity, and investing in our healthcare professionals.”

“With experience as a community advocate, politician and lawyer, I am ready to continue to be your trusted local member,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“I will ensure broad consultation on all proposed laws and make sure our democratic processes are fair for all.

“I will hold the government to account and I commit to keeping the decision making honest, open and transparent.”

Labor member for Elwick Josh Willie said Ms Ogilvie had chosen to stand as an independent and “I wish her all the best.”

Ms Ogilvie, who locked horns with Labor’s left faction over marriage equality, said she resigned from the Labor Party after she became president of the Tasmanian Football Council because she wanted to be impartial.

The election for the three Upper House seats will be held on May 4.
