Heading from the state’s North-West on its way down to the Cygnet Folk Festival, the event stops off in the North at Rowella on Monday night.

Festival of Small Halls producer Eleanor Rigden said Northern Tasmanian audiences were in for a treat when they heard Scandinavian trio Fru Skagerrak and Australian rock and roll artist Liam Gerner perform.

“Fru Skagerrak is a traditional folk trio, in contrast with rock and roll guitarist Liam Gerner. We knew it would be an exciting match, but weren’t ready for how beautiful their music would be,” Ms Rigden said.

“We all teared up at how wonderful it was. It’s a spontaneous collaboration even though they had never met.

“Apart from their stunning musicianship, Fru Skagerrak and Liam Gerner have been chosen because they have the ability to really connect with people through storytelling, they’re up for a laugh, and they have a wonderful warmth and real interest in visiting places a little off the beaten track,” she said.

While the Rowella show was sold out, tickets are still available for the remaining Northern shows at Nunamara Hall on Tuesday, Longford Town Hall on Wednesday and Meander Memorial Hall on Thursday.

These shows include Fru Skagerrak and Gerner, along with Tasmanian support acts.

Festival of Small Halls is produced by Woodfordia Inc, the regional music tour that rekindles the time-old tradition of gathering in small halls for a night of live music, storytelling and community connection.

After its Tasmanian tour, the festival heads to Illawarra Folk Festival in NSW.

“Regional folks put on the best kind of show, and we’re delighted to report more and more new friends leaving the cities to get out and see what it’s all about,” ​Ms Rigden said.

“The opportunity to enjoy musicians of this quality just isn’t regularly available in regional towns. It’s only possible with the support of Woodford Folk Festival, Cygnet Folk Festival and Illawarra Folk Festival and, of course, the dedicated regional communities taking their towns into their own hands and lighting up their local halls.”
