In this profit-driven world sometimes there’s nothing better than getting back to what matters. Supporting local businesses, which really means supporting hardworking and passionate local people.

Communities are built on a foundation of this – the zest and drive of those who care about delivering the best to their fellow citizens.

Such is the ethos of the team at Hatton & Laws Pharmacy who are moving on from the big multinational brand and focusing on the stuff that matters – good staff, good service and a great local customer cohort.

The result? The same top-quality, passionately-run pharmacy you’ve been frequenting for all your health and wellness needs for years, offering personalised service, a huge range of products and a smile all the way through.

So what’s changed? We chatted to business owner David to find all the insider info.

David, what's changed from the old Priceline to the new establishment?

We've moved from the premise's on the corner of Charles and Brisbane Street to 102 Charles Street, condensing the lines that we held as a Priceline Pharmacy to a new health focused pharmacy that just stocks items to support health – no cosmetics, no fragrances, no gifts.

We're health professionals and that's what Matthew and I have refocussed our knowledge and skills upon within the new pharmacy. A smaller footprint in this manner is better catered to ensuring that we only stock what we have to better benefit an individuals healthcare needs.

We're transitioning Hatton & Laws Pharmacy to the next phase of its long association with Launceston history.

What does that means for your loyal customers?

Better facilities to better deliver the healthcare they need and require – we'll be able to offer a faster and more efficient turnaround with prescriptions.

We've changed the format of the dispensary so the pharmacist is central and better available for consultation when customers need it.

We aim to see that every customer can talk with the pharmacist when they're in the pharmacy, be that a quick dash in-store for a prescription refill in their lunch break, or a longer discussion if so required.

What sort of products and services can customers expect to see in the new pharmacy?

Ask us to boil the kettle and we can even have a cuppa! Try getting that from shopping online!

New lines that are unique to us will include better working on wound care management and the facilitation of a compression garment fitting service through our pharmacists and new consultation room.

The new pharmacy will continue to stock all the pharmacy essentials – analgesics (pain medicines), cold/cough/allergy lines, vitamins, children's healthcare, quit smoking, mobility and independent living aids, eye care, first aid, medicated skincare, medicated hair-care, gastrointestinal care, feminine health, oral and dental health.

We'll also be able to offer vaccination services including at this time seasonal influenza vaccination and the meningococcal vaccination available for 10-21 year olds through the federal government program currently available.

We also have a range of herbal tinctures that may be blended on presentation of a naturopath or herbalist prescription; in keeping with the traditional values of the Hatton & Laws history.

What sort of experience will customers have in the new pharmacy?

Customers can expect to deal with friendly staff and pharmacists who want to listen to customer healthcare concerns and offer their solutions.

We want every customer to have a great interaction with staff to achieve their desired healthcare outcome - this may sometimes mean ordering an item in specifically for the customer, it may mean pointing them in the direction they need to pursue another healthcare professional, or it may even mean pointing them in the direction of another store where they can find what they need.

We're here to help local customers - if we can't specifically help them this time, we want to ensure we can help them next time - and that they return next time!

We have private areas for discussion with customers if so required, and quiet music playing (which can be switched off) if so desired at any time for customers who may so require such as those with auditory or sensory disorders.

And why is it important for local people to support local business?

Local business is more than just friendly faces in a shop you know vs. a 'nobody' on a computer screen - you're helping support wages that go back to allowing me and my staff and our families to eat out at their local pub, allowing us to play sports in our local clubs, allowing us to put our kids through swimming classes, allowing us to interact with our community.

Yes, we know you can get many things online or from a competitor cheaper than us, but is that really value, when you can talk to us, discuss what's best for your requirements, and have a chat? Ask us to boil the kettle and we can even have a cuppa! Try getting that from shopping online! I may have to serve other people while we have a chat... but that's how it works!

David Peachey has lived in Launceston for 29 years, originally working for his father Peter Peachey, also a pharmacist, before going into business with Peter and business partner, Matthew van Emmerik. He is now married with two kids and a dog, and “very grateful to raise a family in lovely Launceston”.
