Tasmania Police and the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment are conducting the investigation after finding a dolphin with a number of small wounds.
Tasmania Police said the wounds required further scientific examination to determine the cause.
The dolphin was found on Maurouard Beach at Peron Dunes near St Helens.
Police said both organisations are also aware of a similar situation involving a dolphin found dead near Bridport.
At this stage of the investigation, DPIPWE officers said the use of a firearm cannot be ruled out, but there are a number of natural circumstances that may have contributed to the dolphin’s death, consistent with the wounds evident.
Tasmania Police was alerted to the discovery about 5pm, with initial investigations conducted with DPIPWE.
Anyone with information about the dead dolphins at Maurouard Beach or Bridport is encouraged to contact St Helens Police on 131 444 or information can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au.
