’Canes-fever will be whirling into Launceston this weekend, with numerous men’s and women’s Big Bash League games to be played out at UTAS Stadium.
The Hobart Hurricanes men’s team will play Perth Scorchers on Sunday night, while the women will battle Brisbane Heat earlier in the day.
The women will then play a New Year's Eve against the Heat.
Stadium manager Robert Groenewegen said he was excited to see a repeat of last year's successful match that drew an attendance of 16,734 people.
“We’re absolutely wrapped, it was a great success last year and from what we know so far ticket sales are going pretty well,” he said.
“Really looking forward to a Hurricanes win this year, we didn’t get one last year.”
Mr Groenewegen said though it’s hard to predict how many people will show up on Sunday, a crowd similar to last year would be awesome.
A particular highlight on Sunday will be the return of Cameron Bancroft, who’ll be donning Scorcher orange after serving his nine-month ban in the wake of the sandpaper scandal.
“There may be a few people in the crowd with sandpaper, but that’s terrific to have him back playing cricket and great that his first game is going to be here in Launceston,” Mr Groenewegen said.
He was pleased to see the Hurricanes play an additional game in Launceston this season in January, and will see how they pan out before looking at additional games in the city.
“What we do want to do is keep at least two games and if Cricket Tasmania decides it would be such a success that we’d look at more then so be it,” he said.
“Reality is two games is better compared to no games we had a few years ago.”
