It was anything but a silent night at Launceston’s City Park on Sunday, as young and old sung away at the annual Carols by Candlelight.

Carols organising committee chairman Danny Gibson said the event served as a great start to the festive week.
“Being so close to Christmas, this really is the start of what will be pretty special week for families across Northern Tasmania,” he said.
“We’ve been impressed by the large number of patrons who have turned up.
“Really excited to see so many kids who don’t have to wake up and go to school in the morning.”
Featuring a lineup made entirely of Northern music groups, the cheer brought out the festive side in all who attended.
Mr Gibson said standout performances were given by many musical groups, including the Dads Band.
“I think the really lovely thing is that we have a mixture of traditional carols, which enabled members of the public to raise their candles into the air and sing rather loudly,” he said.
“But of course we have lots of first timers on the stage that were popular.”
Plenty of festivities were had at the carols, but there was also plenty of generosity.
The event raised money for The Examiner’s Empty Stocking Appeal, which is split between Launceston City Mission, Benevolent Society of Launceston, The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.
Mr Gibson was pleased to see so much charity from Carols attendees, with donations from the event estimated at $16,000.
With more than $71,000 already raised for the appeal, Mr Gibson is hopeful the effort from the Carols will surpass the target of $80,000.

Mr Gibson is grateful to all who attended, as well as those who helped organise the Carols.
“We’re really appreciative of the number of people who have come out to support our event,” he said.
“The Rotary Club of Tamar Sunrise is very small and community-minded group of people.
“For us to be able to stage an event at this size and magnitude relies heavily on business support, but also relies on people coming along wanting to enter the spirit of Christmas.”
Mr Gibson said City Park hosting thousands for the Carols was “pretty amazing”.
