The announcement comes after calls this year by the Australian Medical Association and the Mental Health Council of Tasmania to address the state of mental health care in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Health Service has opened recruitment for their Mental Health Hospital in the Home service, being established after clinical advice from the Department of Health and chief psychiatrist Dr Aaron Groves.
IN OTHER NEWS
A psychiatrist, career medical officer, peer worker, and carer are being recruited, along with allied health professionals and registered nurses.
Successful applicants will form the team behind the new service which will allow patients to receive hospital mental health care in their homes – a model also used in other states around Australia.
Once operational, the service is expected to reduce pressure on staff and patients at the Royal Hobart Hospital, until a dedicated 12-bed mental health facility is built at St John’s Park in New Town.
