Tasmania Fire Service will recruit 24 career firefighters in 2019, the largest number to be recruited in a single year since 2000.
Cambridge Senior Station Officer Andrew Skelly is heavily involved in training new recruits.
“I learnt so much from my mentors and you just want to pass that information on,” he said
“We want to recruit the best people that we can.”
A firefighter for 35 years, Mr Skelly loves his being a firefighter because it showed him there was a job out there that could make a difference.
“You’re making a difference to someone on their worst day,” he said.
“Being a firefighter is all about working in a team. We’ve got to work in a team under difficulty circumstances, so everyone has to be on their game, so that’s why our training is so important.”
