The door closed on a red Suzuki Swift waiting to exit the Paterson Street West multi-storey car park.
City of Launceston council general manager Michael Stretton said the cause of the malfunction will be investigated.
“We’re pleased to report there were no injuries, although the vehicle sustained minor damage,” he said.
“The car park has been re-opened and as of this afternoon has returned to normal operation.”
