Devonport born Mr Johnston began his career at WIN 15 years ago.
He has worked as a journalist, presenter and political and media adviser to former Labor leader Bryan Green and current Labor leader Rebecca White.
Mr Johnston is pleased to be returning to where his career began.
“I’m excited to be returning to the newsroom, to lead the team and ensure local news coverage remains strong,” he said.
“I’m passionate about Tasmania and its people, and I’m fascinated by what makes the state tick.
“WIN News is the only news service in Tasmania, dedicated to a half hour of local news, sport and weather each weeknight.”
WIN’s Network news director Stella Lauri said Mr Johnston’s appointment was “testament to the network’s belief in the power of local knowledge and expertise.”
“Alex is the perfect choice for this role,” Ms Lauri said.
“He has come a long way since those fledgling days in the newsroom, amassing more than 15 years’ experience in challenging media and political roles.
“Throughout them all, Alex’s knowledge of Tasmania – its people and its passions – is obvious.”
Mr Johnston, who currently works for Mona, will start his new job in mid-January.
His appointment comes after WIN shed eight jobs in its Tasmanian newsrooms this year and its nightly news is now presented from Wollongong.
