Natural Resource Management facilitator Polly Buchhorn will recommend the council adopt the revised Dog Management Policy 2018 at its December 17 meeting.
The process to review and adopt the new policy began June 2017, with a formal review into the previous policy.
In December 2017, the council adopted a draft revised policy and invited community comments and submissions.
In February 2018, the council deferred a decision on policy until the Parks and Wildlife Service completed an assessment of the areas covered by the draft.
At the council’s October meeting, the council received the second draft of the policy. It then sought community comment and feedback, and consulted with the Parks and Wildlife Service before finalising the policy.
Councillors considered the public submissions and discussed appropriate revisions of the policy at the December 21018 council workshop.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Buchhorn said the revised policy adjusted the balance of the current policy to account for the growing need for good opportunities for responsible dogs and their owners, public health and safety risks, and threats to wildlife and shorebirds.
Changes to the declared areas in the draft included new off-lead areas at Ansons Bay, Dora Point, Scamander, and Mariposa Beach.
An extension to prohibited areas included The Gardens and Moulting Bay, with seasonal prohibition of dogs on Binalong Bay Beach, a rock pool at Boat Harbour Point, and areas at Scamander River and Denison Beach.
There would also be less access for dogs on sporting grounds and golf courses.
Four notices of motion will also be discussed at the meeting.
Two put forward by Councillor Janet Drummond will look into the provision of water refill stations and the live streaming of council meetings. Councillor John Tucker wants council to examine the feasibility for the council working on major road developments, and Councillor Kylie Wright will request a reduction in a speed limit on the Tasman Highway.
The draft policy and meeting agenda is available on the council’s website.
- The meeting is on December 17 from 10am. Agenda available online.
