A Launceston premiership player, Mohr is the only Tasmanian to have spent time at Hawthorn – the club that has called the Apple Isle home for nearly 20 years – and one of the league’s newest expansion clubs. 

The 30-year-old was a Greater Western Sydney foundation player and spent seven years at the club before being delisted at the conclusion of this season.

A rookie draft lifeline will see Mohr play on in brown and gold in 2019, and while the defender has already been impressed by the history and procedures in place at Waverley Park, he’s fully behind Tasmania’s AFL push.  

“I think Tassie probably deserves its own team,” Mohr said.

“I’m not too sure how the AFL sees it all or whatnot … I think the relationship Hawthorn has with Tassie is really good and really strong and I know they’re happy with the situation that we’ve got there.

“But I think somewhere down the line I hope that Tassie could get an AFL team, I really do, I think they deserve it.”

Mohr’s 48 career games have featured just one fixture at UTAS Stadium – a loss to the Hawks in 2013 where he kept direct opponent Lance Franklin to just two goals.

He has also visited in the 2012 pre-season, and will undoubtedly be making it his goal to feature in the Hawks’ March pre-season clash with Richmond. 

“It’ll be exciting to actually get down there and play some games,” he said.

“Hopefully I can put my hand up to get out there … it’d be exciting to play in front of some family and friends that’s for sure.

“I always keep an eye on how Tassie football is going, my brother coaches Scottsdale so I’m always on the phone to him talking and asking how everything’s going down there.

“I’m always keeping a keen eye on it all.”

Mohr has endured a tough run with injuries since being one of just two Giants to play every game in the 2013 season.

Consecutive knee reconstructions kept him sidelined in 2015 and 2016, followed by an ankle complaint at the end of last year which hampered his 2018 campaign.

Since joining the Hawks too weeks ago he has completed every training session, and reported that his body was feeling “100 per cent”.

Mohr said new teammate Grant Birchall – another Tasmanian defender who has been cut down in recent years by knee injuries – was also looking good on the training track. 

“He’s been doing some training with the group,” Mohr said.

“He’s had a pretty bad run with injuries in the last couple of years so it’s good to see him back out there training with the boys and hopefully get can get back to some really good football form this year.

“We’ve had a chat about home and all that and he’s going good.”
