Chief executive Andrew Byrne said they were still looking for a new location to consolidate the RSPCA’s shelter, veterinary and animal welfare services.
“Ideally, we will be looking for a site within say 20-30 minutes of Launceston, it may be a well situated block, have a decent sized shed and be in a location where the public can find us easily,” he said.
“We hope this new site will be the central home for RSPCA Tasmania for the next 50 to 100 years.”
Meanwhile, from now until December 22, all dogs, cats and other animals older than six months will be available for 50 per cent off the regular price of adoption.
Centre manager Lorraine Hamilton said the RSPCA hoped to re-home as many animals as possible before Christmas.
“We know we have to leave and we would love to have all of the animals settled into homes before then, rather than moving them about to other sites,” she said.
“I would never encourage people to get an unexpected or unplanned pet for someone else – we will still be following all of your normal adoption processes.”
A moving sale will also be held at the Mowbray centre on Saturday, December 15 from 10am to 2pm.
