On Wednesday, it was announced Shane Power would relocate with his family from Victoria to take on the role.
Mr Power has 15 years experience in local government. He has a post-graduate management diploma, bachelor of arts majoring in digital media, master of business administration and is currently studying civil engineering.
Mayor Bridget Archer said Mr Power signed a five-year contract.
“At interview Shane demonstrated he has the energy, the experience and the style of leadership which will suit George Town both now and into the future,” she said.
“With Shane’s leadership and the hard-working staff of the council, and our new councillors recently elected, George Town is in very good hands.”
Mr Power said being selected was an honour.
Twenty-five people applied for the position from Tasmania, NSW, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Victoria.
George Town’s former general manager Justine Brooks-Bedelph resigned in August this year.
She had been in the role for about 12 months, but left for a position in the aged care sector.
Ms Brooks-Bedelph has since been elected onto the council as a councillor.
